Outside of owning Cascade CrossFit, I am a firefighter for the Kirkland Fire Department and have been since February 2005. I am also the certified physical trainer for the Kirkland Fire Department. I have always had a passion for sports and fitness. I grew up playing soccer, cross country, wrestling, and tennis and now have a new found passion for pickleball!

I have also completed two marathons, the Seattle to Portland bicycle ride in one day, and a half ironman distance duathlon (bike/run). Through all this, I feel that CrossFit training has gotten me in the best shape I’ve ever been in and helped me feel my best as well. One of the things that I love the most about CrossFit is how you can get an awesome workout in just 20 minutes. The other is the community in this gym. In no other gym do you get to workout with and train with such an awesome group of people. It makes working out so much more fun and helps push you to continuously be better.

I mostly enjoy hanging as a family with Tenny and our two kids, Lyla and Skyler. Family is what is all about!

I started CrossFit in 2009 after my husband, Kyle, introduced me to it. I had, forever, been the girl who preferred to lift weights (although you might look at me and not think so!), and hated the elliptical and treadmill which was what all the women did around me. As soon as Kyle told me to do one 4 minute workout, I was so impressed how I was so sore from just 4 minutes of work rather than an hour at the gym. After joining a CrossFit gym, it became my perfect fit. It was a way for me to stay strong by lifting weights, but also incorporate the things I didn’t like to do (like running and rowing!) to get a well-rounded workout. I had always hated going to the gym and wondering what in the world I was going to do. This gave me a way of being told what to do and not have to think or be bored from the same routine. I loved having the feeling of being “part” of something. At the gym I felt so alone. In a CrossFit gym, I felt like I could go see my new buddies all the time.

Opening Cascade CrossFit – A Natural Fit

After 6 months of doing CrossFit, Kyle and I were blessed with an opportunity to open our own CrossFit gym. We opened in December 2009, and besides being one of the scariest decisions….it is one of the best we have ever made as a couple. I received my Level 1 cert in October 2010, and have been teaching since. With CrossFit, I have been able to not only get in the best shape of my life, learn crazy awesome new things about health and diet, and have experienced one of the truly best things about CrossFit, our community. Our members have so incredibly impacted my life and it’s amazing to be able to walk in everyday and workout with your a second family. It’s really the unique blessing of CrossFit.

Nutrition Is My Passion

CrossFit has helped me through eating issues and learning to appreciate strength rather than just being “skinny”. Through that, I have developed a specific passion for women and helping them be empowered to be strong and accomplish whatever their goal may be. I received my BS in Food Science and Nutrition in 2009 and created a proprietary nutrition program to help clients optimize results.

CrossFit has given me something to work hard at every day. You can always be better, and I love making new goals and achieving things that I truly never could think I could do. I know CrossFit can be incredibly intimidating, as I felt the same way when I first started. However, I promise it can be a life-changing experience once you get started, not just physically but mentally as well. I’m always an open book, so please don’t hesitate to shoot me an email if you ever have questions.

My name is Nick Martindale also known as Nikoli in the Cascade Crossfit community. I’m the “clean freak” as everyone puts it. I started my journey in Crossfit back in January of 2010. I started as a member at Cascade when my brother introduced me to it. Huge reality check! I was the wrestling coach at Chief Kanim at the time and thought I was in shape, I wasn’t. It was the closest thing to wrestling I had ever done and I missed that. After becoming more involved, I decided to get my Level One certification and begin my coaching career at Cascade Crossfit. After coaching for some time an opportunity came up for me to be a part owner. I was more than thrilled to take the offer. I had gone to school and grown up with both Kyle and Tennyson. I wrestled and played soccer with Kyle through high school and was always in some sort of sport growing up. I have always enjoyed being active but above all, I enjoy just hanging out with and getting to know all of the members.

It’s All About The Community

The community at Cascade is what I enjoy most about what I do. There isn’t a day that goes by that someone doesn’t make me smile. I feel so lucky to do what I do and plan on doing it for a long time. When I’m not at the gym I stay busy as a Volunteer/Full Time Firefighter in Fall City where I live. This is another career I am passionate about. I also do carpentry for my brothers millwork and cabinetry company when I have any extra time to help out. If you see me in the gym, please come say hello. I love getting to know people outside of just exercising.

I started Crossfit in 2010 on a whim; it made me realize how out of shape I was, even though I was working out at a standard gym doing “bodybuilding” style workouts. Quickly I realized Crossfit was my passion, so I earned my Level 1 certification in 2011.

Always Striving To Be Better

I have coached at two local gyms and served as Head Coach/Director of Programming at Crossfit Issaquah from 2013-2016. The best part about Crossfit is that I never feel like I’m done learning or evolving as a coach. Crossfit has pushed me to grow so much as an individual, more so mentally than even the physical discipline.

Safety Matters

I absolutely LOVE the daily interactions with members that coaching provides. No other job would allow me to develop such great relationships with people who are seeking help and who also WANT to be there. Any time a coach can make a difference in someone’s day, whether it’s a compliment or just a simple technique cue on a lift, that’s priceless. I owe Crossfit my life, and I’m passionate about keeping everyone safe and happy while they’re in the gym so that they can have the same life-changing experience I have had.

I grew up in Cincinnati, OH and I have been living in the Seattle Area since 2014.

I love coaching CrossFit because I want to help others improve their lives the same way that Crossfit has improved mine.  It has made me stronger, healthier, and much more conscious of my body’s physical capabilities.

Background

I grew up active in various sports, including track, cheerleading, and gymnastics.  I graduated from Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and started my career in the Finance organization at Procter & Gamble.  After I entered the real world, my “healthy lifestyle” consisted of weight training at the local gym, running a lot, and eating as little as possible while being very social and going to happy hours during the week and “staying out late” with friends on the weekends.  While I mostly enjoyed that life and developed a lot of friendships at the local gym, my mindset was not healthy.  My main indicator of “success” was weight and appearance.  In 2010 I became interested in Physique competitions and focused a lot of time and energy in preparing for the upcoming competition, which had me extremely burnt out.

My best friend, Kim, encouraged me to join a new gym “Queen City CrossFit” and after hearing her rant enough, I finally joined (it took about 2 weeks of convincing – I was very skeptical after googling “CrossFit” and seeing a video of what looked like a horrible event of people lifting bars and doing pull-ups in a sand pit at an early CrossFit games event).  After joining, I quickly realized it was a lot more fun to focus on strength and performance improvements, rather than how tiny a size of jeans I could fit into.  I noticed incredible gains in strength and form during my first 3 months at QCC and achieved athletic feats I deemed impossible for me (like an unassisted pull-up).  I will be forever grateful to my first two coaches, Chad and Siu Weldishofer.  I continue to be amazed that while they put their blood sweat and tears into growing their gym and business, they were willing to put in the time to provide great coaching instruction while CrossFit was so new.  They fostered a wonderful community and great excitement in me as an athlete and trainer while I was learning all the basics.  At that point, I also began to pay a lot more attention to nutrition.  With the right kind of training and diet, I was able to qualify for National Level NPC Physique competitions.  After competing in that circuit in 2012 and 2013, I decided to focus purely on CrossFit and improve my fitness without the pressure of keeping my body fat at certain percentages year-long.

From the beginning, I fell in love with the great community surrounding CrossFit and I felt very strongly that the world needed more of this!  That brings me to present day, Here in Issaquah.  After working as an analyst at Liberty Mutual for a few months, I decided to take a leap and become a full-time trainer at Cascade in July 2016, and I have been loving it!  I feel fortunate to be working with a great group of coaches and clients, and living the dream of helping people realize they are capable of amazing things.

Coaching at Cascade CrossFit since 2010 has been amazing! It’s such a healthy and supportive community to be associated with. I feel grateful for the opportunity to coach such hardworking and humble athletes. I love having the ability to work with individuals on their training and nutrition and help them identify a path to reach their personal goals. It’s also rewarding to see how much it affects their spouse and kids simply by them leading by example.

Coaching has always been a passion of mine, and I have a specific interest in strength training, nutrition, and goal setting.

Outside of the gym I’m a Career Firefighter for Eastside Fire & Rescue and love spending my free time outdoors with my wife Vanessa and English Bulldog Stella.

I grew up in the southwest suburbs of Chicago.  I graduated from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas with a Bachelor degree in both Nursing and Kinesiology. While at UNLV, I was a four-year letter-winner on the varsity softball team. I came to Seattle as a Registered Nurse and landed a job in the Emergency Department at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue.

Hooked on CrossFit

I started CrossFit in 2010 when my brother’s friend introduced me to the sport. I was instantly hooked. I obtained a Level One Certification and started coaching right away. I’ve competed on a team at the Northwest Regionals in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. CrossFit allows me to have a competitive outlet beyond my college athletics. I love the positive attitude and motivating aspects the CrossFit Community brings. Overall, I love health and wellness.  I love the outdoors and I love being active. I will pretty much do anything to take advantage of the amazing Pacific Northwest. I completed a half marathon and biked the Seattle to Portland just to say, “I did it!” I love water skiing, snow skiing, hiking and all recreational sports. My husband, Paul Zavaglia, also coaches here at Cascade CrossFit. I met Paul at a CrossFit competition! We have a beautiful baby girl named Boston and the most lovable little white dog named Maverick.

A Passion for Play

“Where are you from?” is a common question I seem to get asked. My answer is: The Pacific Northwest, Whistler, and Australia. I’ve lived in all three places and have always enjoyed traveling and adventures. I grew up in this area and after graduating from UW, my adventure cravings took me to Whistler, B.C. for five years where I was a snowboard instructor in the winters and worked at a mountain bike shop in the summers. Anything outdoors is my thing: hiking, mountain biking, skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, paddle boarding, beach volleyball…you name it.

CrossFit Changed Me

After Whistler, a backpacking trip around the world including a 12-day hike through the Himalayas brought me to the tropical Cairns, Australia where I stayed for 4 years. This is where I tried CrossFit for the first time. I was the ultimate beginner – I couldn’t do a pushup and it took me a year to do a pull-up. Fast-forward several years and not only am I fitter and feel healthier, but I am less shy, enjoy competing, and have more self-confidence in and outside the gym. The never-ending opportunity to progress is what I love about CrossFit.

As a coach since 2014, I enjoy teaching and encouraging the practice of patience and consistency. I continue to learn and develop myself as a coach from seminars, certifications, and books; but mostly, from our members who not only help me become a better coach and person, but also inspire me with their achievements, kindness, and positive attitudes found here at Cascade CrossFit.

I found CrossFit back in early 2008. After my first workout, I was hooked! I used CrossFit to train for collegiate rugby at the University of Washington.

A Passion for Coaching, And Life

I have been coaching since mid-2008 and have competed most years as either an individual or team member. My team won the very first affiliate cup in 2009 at The Ranch in Aromas, CA. My specific areas of interest in coaching are movement/mobility and Olympic weightlifting.

When I’m not in the gym, I am a full-time firefighter in Bellevue. When I’m off duty I can be found hanging out with my wife, Caitlyn, and our family in good ‘ole Fall City.  We have a daughter named Boston and ‘lil pooch named Maverick. I love what CrossFit has done for me, not only in preparing for college rugby but also for the rigors of being a firefighter.  I really enjoy achieving new goals, but not as much as I enjoy seeing our members achieve theirs.  From CrossFit introducing me to my wife, to getting me into the best shape of my life, it has had a really positive influence on me.

Being a Trainer Is In My Blood

The competitive nature of CrossFit was something that I was missing since playing rugby in college. I work as a firefighter with the Bellevue Fire Department where I also serve as a Peer Fitness Instructor. I enjoy the camaraderie of the gym and I love working out with my friends. One of the most rewarding aspects of being a coach at Cascade CrossFit is watching our athletes, both new and seasoned, better themselves and our community by reaching goals they never thought attainable through CrossFit.
